The final day of the summer transfer window was calm at the Santiago Bernabeu offices, with Real Madrid considering their business closed much before that.

Indeed, there were no deals – incoming or outgoing – at Valdebebas on Monday, although it has now emerged that there was an attempt from another club to sign one of Xabi Alonso’s players.

Girona made a late offer for Andriy Lunin

Indeed, according to Defensa Central, Girona expressed interest in signing goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in recent days and tried to convince Real Madrid to let him leave on loan, but the proposal came very late in the window.

In fact, as per the report, the last call regarding the matter was made yesterday evening around 18:30, a little under six hours before the transfer window closed, in a desperate attempt, but nothing changed, as Real Madrid turned down their request.

The Catalan side, who were already close to finalising Dominik Livakovic’s signing, ultimately roped in the Croatian goalkeeper as their plan B after failing to secure Lunin.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian international will continue as Thibaut Courtois’s deputy, even though chances of featuring regularly appear slim. Indeed, Lunin, thus far, has not seen any minutes in the new season under Xabi Alonso.

However, there may be some hope for the 26-year-old to get some opportunities down the line as the new manager had shown an inclination to rotate his goalkeepers between competitions back at Bayer Leverkusen.

Lunin has been on Real Madrid’s books for seven years now, and has made 62 first-team appearances thus far. He has a contract with the club until 2030.
