According to a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, it appears that Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, a move that could significantly disrupt Manchester United’s plans.

The outlet mentions that the Premier League club had been making steady progress in negotiations and appeared to be closing in on a deal worth around €80 million.

But as is often the case in the transfer market, Real Madrid’s involvement changes everything.

Man Utd were in negotiations

Manchester United had identified Guimaraes as the ideal replacement for Casemiro, who is set to leave the club.

Within the club, Casemiro himself played a role in influencing that decision. He strongly supported the idea of Guimaraes stepping into his role, believing the Newcastle midfielder had the right profile to lead United’s next phase.

However, Madrid’s sudden interest has complicated what once looked like a straightforward deal.

As such, timing has also played its part. Newcastle’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Barcelona has opened the door for potential departures, and Guimaraes is now one of the most sought-after names on the market.

Not a new target

It must be remembered that Real Madrid have been tracking Guimaraes for years

Back during Carlo Ancelotti’s spell, the midfielder was already on Madrid’s radar as a long-term successor to Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

At one point, a move was close, but it never materialised. Now, though, the situation has come full circle.

With uncertainty surrounding Eduardo Camavinga’s future and the club searching for a midfield orchestrator, Guimaraes has re-emerged as a serious option.

Meanwhile, from a tactical perspective, Guimaraes fits the profile perfectly, as he combines defensive awareness with technical security.

At this stage, nothing is final, but what is certain is that the landscape has changed.
