Real Madrid have submitted all available evidence to UEFA and are cooperating with its investigation after racist incidents during Tuesday’s Champions League match away to SL Benfica at Da Luz in Lisbon. The club said in a statement that it had provided the material and was assisting the probe into the unacceptable events. It did not name the Benfica player alleged to have abused Vinícius.
Until now Madrid had been the only party directly involved yet to comment. Players Kylian Mbappé, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni spoke first, followed by coaches Mourinho and Arbeloa, while the protagonists, Prestianni and Vinícius, used social media.
Benfica backed its footballer, UEFA opened an investigation and FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed support for Vinícius. The statement arrived 48 hours after the match.
Madrid also thanked the unanimous backing, support and affection shown towards Vinicius Jr from across world football.
The club will continue working with institutions to help eradicate racism, violence and hate in sport and wider society.
