Real Madrid are being linked with a shock move for Sunderland right-back Trai Hume this summer, at around €22 million, roughly £19 million. Defensa Central reports he is among several right-sided options being assessed as low-cost cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The report says Real are reviewing the market amid the expected departure of long-serving Dani Carvajal, targeting rotation rather than a major outlay. Hume is named alongside Josh Acheampong, Givairo Read, Matt Wieffer and Vanderson.
It appears unlikely at this stage, yet underlines how far Hume’s reputation has grown after another strong season for Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international has been a consistent performer under Régis Le Bris, valued for versatility, intensity and reliability.
Hume came through Ballymena United and Linfield, making his senior Linfield debut in April 2019. A loan at hometown club Ballymena brought 37 appearances and six goals before he returned as first-choice right-back.
Sunderland signed him in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He debuted in a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town the following month and became a regular in 2022-23.
His rise earned a contract extension in 2023, then a long-term agreement after promotion to the Premier League, keeping him until summer 2030. Earlier this season he scored his first Premier League goal in a 4-3 loss to Aston Villa.
