According to L’Equipe, Monaco want to keep Simon Adingra but are unlikely to trigger Sunderland’s £14.8m option, and could instead pursue a cheaper arrangement.
The Ivory Coast winger joined on loan in January after limited minutes on Wearside, then played regularly, 16 appearances with 11 starts, mostly at left wing-back. His loan runs until 30 June.
The deal carries a €17m purchase clause, around £14.8m, and Monaco paid a €1m loan fee, around £870,000, in January. The report also notes a €7.5m option, around £6.5m, in Wout Faes’ loan from Leicester City.
Monaco are said to be working under financial strain linked to reduced Ligue 1 TV income and uncertainty over European competition. As a result, activating Adingra’s full clause is viewed as very unlikely.
Alternative solutions are being weighed, including a renegotiated fee with Sunderland or another loan. Any move is complicated by Adingra’s contract with the Black Cats to 2030. Monaco also like the idea of keeping Faes, though not necessarily by using the current option.
For Sunderland, Adingra’s situation will be one to monitor this summer. His Monaco minutes have preserved his value and profile, but any extension would require fresh talks if the club want to retain him.
