Real Madrid have identified Enzo Fernández, 25, as José Mourinho’s priority midfield reinforcement after judging a deal for Michael Olise unrealistic, Marca reports.
The report adds club president Florentino Pérez is said to have opened preliminary talks with Chelsea, with an official approach planned in the coming days.
Fernández is understood to have indicated to the Spanish club that he will do everything possible to facilitate a move.
Mourinho has long admired the Argentinian, who played for Benfica in 2022/23, and sees him as a fit for the model he plans to implement on his return to the Bernabéu.
Other midfield options assessed included Mateus Fernandes, said to be preferred by Tottenham, and Ayyoub Bouaddi, but neither is viewed by the coach as ideal for the project.
Chelsea are resisting a sale and do not want to lose another important player, particularly after Marc Cucurella’s €50 million move to Real Madrid, though Fernández’s desire to move to Spain could yet prove decisive.
