The Athletic reports that Real Madrid could be required to pay €15m to appoint José Mourinho. Any agreement remains conditional on Florentino Pérez being re-elected on 7 June.
Mourinho, 63 and still in charge at Benfica, is Pérez’s preferred choice and is thought to be close to a return to Madrid, 13 years after his first spell ended.
His Benfica contract is understood to have contained a release clause of about €6m, valid for 10 working days after the season ended, which is said to have expired on Friday 29 May.
Madrid did not activate it because, on 12 May, Pérez called a new presidential election at an extraordinary press conference.
He had hoped to confirm the return after the final La Liga matchday, which would have been financially preferable. The process is now on hold until after the vote.
