That stance reflects caution over what is viewed as premature messaging from Madrid, or possibly genuine doubt about the move.

He was close to extending last month before Liverpool ultimately did not approve the agreement. He intends to remain in a competitive environment, and links to Saudi clubs are being dismissed.

Madrid fit the criteria and the defender has not hidden his interest in a club still considered among the world’s biggest despite a very disappointing season. With a presidential vote on Sunday, any movement is unlikely before then.
