According to SuperDepor.com, Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni clashed after training at Valdebebas, leaving the Uruguayan needing hospital treatment.

Tension had built since Wednesday, then erupted on Thursday when Valverde refused to greet his team-mate. After a bruising session, the row spilled into the dressing room.

In the melee Valverde suffered a heavy contusion and a cut requiring urgent care. The injury is said to have stemmed from the struggle rather than a direct blow from the Frenchman.

The hierarchy stepped in. José Ángel Sánchez, Florentino Pérez's right-hand man, led an emergency meeting in the dressing room. Disciplinary proceedings were opened for both, and the squad were kept inside as attempts to calm tempers faltered.

The unrest appears wider. A recent Carreras-Rüdiger clash emerged, the Spaniard later calling it a settled matter, with relations described as strained. Dani Carvajal and Dani Ceballos are said to have fallen in Álvaro Arbeloa's plans.

Kylian Mbappe has also come under scrutiny over fitness while he recovers from injury, after being seen on holiday with his partner and with his commitment to team-mates questioned.

Madrid face Barcelona this weekend. If the result goes against them, Barcelona will be crowned champions, leaving Madrid staring at a second successive trophyless season and a fractured squad on the eve of the game.
