It has been a considerable amount of time since Dani Carvajal has returned to full training and has been a part of the Real Madrid squad.
However, barring 14 minutes of action against AS Monaco, the veteran defender has yet to make any meaningful appearance for Real Madrid.
This is despite the fact that the other key right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold, remains injured, while there has been a change of managers as well.
According to MARCA, the fitness levels of Carvajal are still far below what is required to be a part of Alvaro Arbeloa’s starting XI.
That is why the Real Madrid manager, who has ushered in a positive environment in the team, has relied on other options, including Federico Valverde.
This is quite problematic in the context of Carvajal’s future, knowing the veteran’s contract at Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of the season.

At Real Madrid, nothing can be taken for granted, as highlighted by another former right-back, Lucas Vazquez, when he was offering his verdict on Xabi Alonso’s dismissal.
Keeping that in mind, it could become near impossible for Carvajal to earn a contract extension if he continues to warm the bench.
Not to mention, Carvajal also wants to be a part of Spain’s team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. While he is part of Luis de la Fuente’s plans, nothing can be guaranteed.
The coming months, therefore, could be critical and every game will be treated as a final, as the player not only looks to earn a contract but also find himself a spot in Spain’s World Cup squad.
