Jose Mourinho derby took centre stage as new Champions League campaign got underway

Two European heavyweights served up an entertaining Champions League clash as Real Madrid held on against Inter to seal victory in the opening round of league phase action on Tuesday night. Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde were both on target in the first half, though Thibaut Courtois was the star of the show.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper was kept busy all night, making saves from Curtis Jones, Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu. He was eventually beaten with 13 minutes of normal time remaining, but Carlos Augusto’s goal proved a mere consolation as the damage done in the first half was decisive.

Victory for Jose Mourinho against his former club was the perfect response to the LaLiga loss to Real Betis last time out. Inter, meanwhile, have seen their unbeaten start come to and end.
