Real Madrid have welcomed FIFA's decision to drop its plan to sell a share of its competitions' commercial rights to private investors. The club said in a statement that the move was excellent news for football, its institutions and millions of supporters.

The Spanish club also expressed gratitude to UEFA and other institutions that firmly opposed the project, crediting their unity and sense of duty with protecting the game at a crucial moment.

Facing firm opposition from UEFA and several confederations, Gianni Infantino announced overnight from Friday to Saturday that he was withdrawing a proposal to create a company open to private investors. It would have run FIFA's commercial and events activities, including the World Cup.

Pressure on Infantino has intensified, with claims he has lost UEFA's confidence and that he has been asked to resign.

Concacaf has taken a similar line after calling for a full review of FIFA governance. Infantino is seeking a fourth term at the election in March 2027, and his position is more fragile than ever after this week.
