Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy was forced off early with an apparent muscle problem during Sunday’s trip to Espanyol.

According to L'Équipe, he started the La Liga fixture but, after a long recovery run chasing a ball in behind, went to ground three minutes before his withdrawal to signal he was hurt.

He was substituted in the 14th minute, with the issue appearing muscular as he left the field.

He indicated to the medical staff that the pain was in the upper part of his right thigh, which he held while departing.

It was another setback for the France international, capped 10 times, who has been hampered by muscle problems in recent months. This was only his third La Liga start of the season, and his fifth appearance.
