Real Sociedad have lodged an appeal against the red card shown to Arkaitz Mariezkurrena in Sanse’s game at Ceuta on Saturday, seeking to have it overturned or any punishment reduced. According to Diario Vasco, the club has challenged the match report filed by referee Daniel Miranda Bolaño.

The academy forward faces a four-match suspension if the Disciplinary Committee applies Article 103 of the Disciplinary Code, which treats the incident as aggression without a challenge for the ball but without injury to the opponent.

The dispute centres on wording the club say does not reflect what happened. The referee recorded that Mariezkurrena was dismissed in the 33rd minute for striking an opponent with his leg using excessive force when the ball was not in dispute.

That characterisation is contested, with footage showing the striker barely lifts a knee as he crosses paths with Matos and, if there is contact, it appears slight. The phrase excessive force is seen as an attempt to justify an unjustifiable dismissal.

The report adds that the referee had his back to the incident and relied entirely on an assistant’s account. Without checking the pitchside monitor and before the VAR could confirm any alleged aggression, the red card was shown immediately.
