Real Sociedad’s defence looks set to change this summer after the announced exit of Aritz following 11 years.
According to Diario Vasco, Caleta-Car will depart unless the club pay about 3.5 million euros to buy him from Olympique de Lyon. Jon Pacheco and Javi López return from Alavés and Oviedo, though the latter is not in the plans despite a deal to 2030.
Without Caleta-Car and pending B team calls, eight defenders remain: Aramburu, Odriozola, Jon Martín, Zubeldia, Pacheco, Sergio Gómez, Aihen and Javi López. Odriozola is out until year’s end.
The club are likely to seek an exit for Javi López on the left. A decision is due on Jon Balda, who has 33 games, goals and two assists for the B team this season.
Everything points to signing an experienced left-sided centre-back. Pacheco returns at 25 after 25 matches for Alavés but lost his place under Quique Sánchez Flores and has had ankle issues.
Matarazzo’s view will shape the rebuild. That may help explain the decision not to renew Aritz. Rino has trusted Aramburu, Jon Martín, Sergio Gómez and, ahead of Zubeldia, Caleta-Car. He could back a left-sided centre-back to improve build-up, and Caleta-Car’s minutes reflect that need.
Another option is Luken Beitia, who has trained with the first team during injury spells. He could stay with the B team for another year, especially if it remains in Segunda.
Only an unwelcome twist with Jon Martín, on several clubs’ radar, would change things. The club are calm given his deal to 2031 and a 60 million clause, though his salary might need adjusting to his status.
