Nick Woltemade’s failed move to FC Bayern has been on his mind for a long time. Now the international player talks openly about the emotional ups and downs of the summer transfer window – and why he is now glad he didn’t end up in Munich

The summer of transfer 2025 was an emotional rollercoaster for Nick Woltemade. For weeks, the VfB Stuttgart attacking player was considered FC Bayern’s preferred candidate and talks between the clubs dominated the headlines. In the end, however, the hoped-for move to Säbener Straße did not materialise. Instead, Woltemade moved to Newcastle United for around €75 million – a deal that was lucrative for Stuttgart and initially meant a change for the player himself

In an interview with Sport BILD, Woltemade has now spoken openly about this phase and found remarkably reflective words. The 23-year-old had committed himself early on to a move to FC Bayern, but the Swabians‘ high transfer fee demands were ultimately unaffordable for the Munich club. A situation that was difficult for the player to accept, as he himself admits

„When I realized that it probably wouldn’t work out, I said to myself: Okay, then that’s how it should be,“ Woltemade explained in retrospect. It was not an easy moment for a young international who was on the verge of joining Germany’s biggest club. The dream of FC Bayern did not fall through because of sporting doubts, but due to economic conditions

However, it is precisely this point that seems to have helped Woltemade to put the situation into perspective in hindsight. „Everything has a purpose in life,“ he emphasizes and makes it clear that he no longer sees the failed Bayern transfer as a missed opportunity, but as a turning point. Without Munich’s hesitation, the move to England would never have worked out – and it is precisely there that the attacker now feels right at home

Newcastle? „I was immediately keen“

The move to Newcastle United quickly became a decision of the heart. When his advisor first informed him of the Magpies‘ interest, Woltemade was immediately open to talks. Coach Eddie Howe in particular played a decisive role in this. „I was in the mood straight away,“ says the striker. The talks were intensive, honest and convincing – in the end, the decision was made without much doubt

The move has already paid off in sporting terms. In his first 21 competitive games for Newcastle, Woltemade scored seven goals and quickly established himself in the Premier League. The physical style of play, pace and confidence of the coach suit his profile. Looking back, the move seems like a logical development – even if it wasn’t originally plan A

For FC Bayern, Woltemade remains a missed transfer target, but for the player himself, the story has become a positive one.
