Régis Le Bris has confirmed Juan Riquelme Angulo will join Sunderland's squad at the end of the week, with travel to Wearside now approved.
According to Sunderland Echo, the club had been waiting for his visa to be approved after his deadline-day move from Independiente del Valle. Le Bris said staff worked closely with Angulo and that the club’s Portuguese first-team coach José Fonte stayed in regular contact.
He said Fonte held video calls and that Angulo is eager to start, describing him as another huge, talented prospect for the club.
Angulo is expected to begin training next week. He was not registered in the Europa League squad, so he will not feature in the league phase. He can play in the Premier League and domestic cups and is expected to be the third striker.
Sunderland beat competition from leading European clubs to sign him. Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the player had long been on their radar and wanted the move, but Independiente del Valle preferred a December exit due to the Copa Libertadores. He said Sunderland pushed for now because they foresaw minutes for him, and that the player’s Premier League ambition, positive feeling for Sunderland and values made the fit.
