Régis Le Bris believes Sunderland’s utility men could be decisive as injuries threaten to bite following the 3-1 defeat to Fulham.
According to Sunderland Echo, Reinildo and Dennis Cirkin suffered issues in the build-up, with Cirkin’s problem not thought to be serious. During the first half Nordi Mukiele and Jocelin Ta Bi were forced off, and post-match Le Bris flagged further concerns over Brian Brobbey and Romaine Mundle.
With a small squad, the head coach said he may need to lean on Trai Hume, Luke O’Nien and Lutsharel Geertruida to cover multiple roles. He referenced Liverpool’s recent right-back difficulties to underline the value of players who can manage different options.
Sunderland are hopeful Bertrand Traoré will return to training this week, which would add welcome experience for the upcoming run.
Le Bris said those handed chances often need time to step up from the bench, and that a player might become a starter for two, three or four games. He remains confident they can respond and will provide an injury update at his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.
