Régis Le Bris on where José Fonte fits at Sunderland and what he adds | OneFootball

According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris says José Fonte’s European knowledge and recent playing experience will bring a different dimension to Sunderland’s coaching staff.

Fonte started work on Wearside on Monday after ending his playing career at the end of last season. The former Southampton and Portugal defender has played at major international tournaments and in numerous European campaigns.

Le Bris said his group found a good balance over the last four or five months of 2026/27, and he believes Fonte can add without disrupting that flow. He noted the staff lacked that specific profile and said he hopes they will find the right balance.

The new coach will link up with Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini, set pieces coach James Brayne, Chief Analyst Isidre Ramón Madir and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.

Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte arrives with top-level experience and energy, praising a technical staff already performing strongly under Le Bris. He added that leadership qualities could add value as Sunderland aim to progress in the Premier League and on the European stage, and said the club are delighted to welcome him.
