Régis Le Bris outlines where José Fonte fits in Sunderland’s coaching group | OneFootball

Régis Le Bris says José Fonte’s European knowhow and recent top-level playing career will bring a different edge to Sunderland’s coaching team.

According to Sunderland Echo, Fonte began work on Monday after deciding to end his playing career at the end of last season. The former Southampton and Portugal defender played at major international tournaments and featured in numerous European campaigns.

Le Bris said he was satisfied with the structure he used in the final months of the 2026/27 campaign, as the club surged to Europa League qualification, and believes Fonte can complement it rather than detract.

He described Fonte as a high-level professional with strong standards and European knowledge, and said his integration should not disrupt the existing workflow while the staff seek the right balance.

Fonte will work alongside coaches Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini, set pieces lead James Brayne, Chief Analyst Isidre Ramón Madir and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.

Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte brings vast experience and energy, and that his leadership will add value as Sunderland look to push on in the Premier League and in Europe.
