Régis Le Bris said Malick Fofana showed the personality to excite Sunderland supporters on debut in the 1-1 draw at Brentford.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 21-year-old came on with just under 15 minutes left at the Gtech Community Stadium, replacing Noah Sadiki on the left in his first appearance since joining from Lyon.
Le Bris felt the winger embraced pressure, demanded the ball and attacked his opponent, stressing that such confidence is vital in wide areas, and he hopes the display proves a positive platform.
Fofana could make his first start on Tuesday when Hull City visit in the Carabao Cup third round. Le Bris indicated he might rotate heavily, by as many as nine or 10 changes.
Romaine Mundle missed the Brentford trip with an injury. Le Bris declined to detail the issue or a timeframe and said the club will communicate next week, with Mundle having missed spells last season with hamstring problems.
Habib Diarra faces between six and eight weeks out after a hamstring injury in the win over Fulham. Nilson Angulo impressed in the first half at Brentford, and Fofana strengthens the left-side options.
Chemsdine Talbi was omitted as a move remains possible, Le Bris said. Sunderland did not register him for their Europa League squad while talks continue, and with England’s window closed he can still join a league where the market is open.
