Régis Le Bris says referee Chris Kavanagh admitted he should have awarded Sunderland a penalty in the Liverpool defeat.

According to Sunderland Echo, the official told Le Bris at half-time he had erred after Brian Brobbey tangled with Ibrahima Konate as Sunderland tried to cross from the right on Wednesday night. Kavanagh declined to give a foul, a brief VAR check followed and the whistle went for the interval.

Le Bris said, "It was a pen." He argued Brobbey’s physical style needs more respect and a different view, and suggested the striker might be rewarded more often.

Brobbey has become a key figure after his move from Ajax on deadline day last summer. Virgil van Dijk praised him as a handful, noted his improved fitness and hoped he could carry this form through the season and into the World Cup.

Le Bris agreed and urged the 24-year-old to keep progressing. He said Liverpool’s centre-backs, Van Dijk and Konate, were outstanding, and that Brobbey had three or four sights of goal but the defending was excellent. He added he spoke with Brobbey on Friday morning, feeling Liverpool’s respect underlined the scale of the challenge.
