Régis Le Bris says Sunderland will not impose limits this season as they embrace a first European campaign in over 50 years.

The head coach feels the club are ahead of where they were a year ago as they prepare to meet RC Lens on Saturday in their penultimate pre-season friendly. He believes several players are primed to kick on.

He reiterated that 40 points remains the priority, but said Sunderland will give everything in every competition and see how far they can go. He expects standards to mirror last season’s refusal to set a ceiling and senses a stronger culture in camp than at the same stage last year.

Le Bris noted that a number of squad members now carry either a first or an additional Premier League season, and some have World Cup experience. He cautioned that the division is demanding, yet the group intend to push as far as possible.

He is set to name a strong side against the Ligue 1 club before attention turns to Ipswich Town on opening day in a fortnight.
