Birmingham City could be at risk of losing key defender Phil Neumann as Premier League side Hull City see him as a potential defensive ‘reinforcement’.

The 29-year-old arrived at St Andrew’s last summer from German side Hannover in an effort to reinforce Blues’ Championship campaign.

The centre-back swiftly cemented his place at the heart of Chris Davies’ backline, featuring in 32 Championship appearances and won big praise for his consistency throughout the campaign.

Neumann has also carried that momentum into pre-season, remaining an integral part of Birmingham City’s preparations ahead of the new campaign, with Davies clearly counting on the 29-year-old.

Just a year after arriving at St Andrew’s, however, the German could now be presented with the opportunity to make the step up to Premier League football.

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Hull City have ‘shown interest’ in Neumann as they explore defensive reinforcements this summer.

Whether the Tigers decide to intensify their pursuit remains to be seen, although the defender is understood to feature on their shortlist.

Whether Birmingham City would prove willing to part with Neumann is another matter entirely, with the German regarded as a cornerstone of their defensive unit while also having two years remaining on his contract.

The prospect of Premier League football could nevertheless appeal to Neumann, with Hull City hoping to generate momentum should they press ahead with their interest over the coming weeks.

Hull City have Premier League cash to spend and would be able to make a substantial offer for the German.

The Tigers have already reinforced their defensive ranks through the arrivals of Matt Targett on a free transfer following his departure from Newcastle United, while Nobel Mendy is tipped to join from Rayo Vallecano.

Birmingham City, meanwhile, recently strengthened their own backline with the signing of Kristoffer Lund, a player Davies has spoken highly of following his arrival.

Now all eyes will be on how the situation with Neumann plays out over the coming weeks.
