Release clause or nothing: Barcelona warned off move for defender

Barcelona have set their sights on adding at least two defenders to Hansi Flick’s squad before the summer transfer window closes. There is optimism that a deal will finally be done for Joao Cancelo, although there is less certainty regarding Jorge Salinas, who is another player that the club has been chasing for several weeks.

Barcelona have been after Salinas since June, but they have been unable to reach an agreement with Racing Club de Santander up until now. They already know that the 19-year-old is prioritising a move to the Spotify Camp Nou, but until there is a club-to-club agreement, they will not be able to think about signing him.

Racing Club are clear that they want Salinas to stay ahead of their La Liga return, and sporting director Chema Aragón has confirmed to the media (via Sport) that no negotiations will be held – if any club wants to sign the defender, they must trigger his release clause.

“He has a contract with us, as you know. So, if they don’t bring the termination clause, you know what’s going to happen. We give value to the heritage we have, we give them importance. For the club, at the moment, there is no other possibility than to try to strengthen the team and not weaken with the stars. The reality is that the club that wants him has to arrive with the proposal. I hope he stays. It would be our illusion. We are going to try by all means to do it, but it is also true that, if three important offers come, it will be more complicated.”

Barcelona unwilling to pay more than €6m for Salinas

Racing Club’s stance makes it very difficult for Barcelona to sign Salinas this summer. If they continue to insist that a deal will not be done for any less than €16m, it will rule the Catalans out of contention, given that they are only prepared to pay €6m – although they are prepared to include players in a possible deal, which could tempt the La Liga newcomers.
