Renato Gaúcho has rejected Vasco’s opening offer to become head coach, but negotiations are ongoing. The club are working with urgency and preparing an improved proposal, with a decision, either way, possible by Tuesday.
According to Globo.com, Renato viewed the initial terms as too low and has asked for a salary in line with what he earned at Fluminense. Vasco’s hierarchy initially judged that figure beyond what they are willing to pay, yet there is confidence the gap could narrow.
He remains the leading candidate and has strong backing internally. After a board meeting on Monday, Pedrinho informed the coach’s representatives that a new bid would be made and contacts have intensified.
Talks began the day after Fernando Diniz departed following a 1-0 defeat to Fluminense in the first leg of the Campeonato Carioca semi-final. An initial approach gauged Renato’s interest, and he signalled readiness to advance discussions.
In parallel, the club explored foreign options and sounded out Artur Jorge and Marcelo Gallardo, but neither pursuit progressed.
Renato, 63, has managed Vasco twice, from 2005 to 2007 and again in 2008. He was also targeted late in 2024 after Rafael Paiva’s dismissal, but he declined Pedrinho’s invitation and Fábio Carille was hired in early 2025.
