Renato Gaúcho will return to Vasco for a third spell, having led Vasco from 2005 to 2007 and in 2008, when he coached the now president Pedrinho. According to Globo.com, Vasco moved to appoint him on Tuesday after his salary demands were aligned with the board’s limits.

Across his earlier tenure he oversaw 111 official games, posting 46 wins, 35 draws and 30 defeats, a 52% return.

His 2008 stint was the briefest, 14 games at season’s end, the year of the club’s first relegation. Pedrinho was an experienced leader, while Coutinho and Alex Teixeira were emerging talents.

Under Renato, Coutinho and Alex Teixeira took their first steps with the seniors. Coutinho did not debut until 2009, but trained with the first team, while Alex featured for most of 2008.

He took over in September 2008 after an invitation from president Roberto Dinamite, tasked with staving off the drop. Vasco were 17th with 13 rounds remaining.

Relegation was sealed on the final day with defeat to Vitória at São Januário on 7 December. Over that run his side won four, drew two and lost seven, a 36% return.

It was not the first time Pedrinho sought him. The president tried in late 2024, after Rafael Paiva’s dismissal, but he declined and called talks with Pedrinho in his role as president ‘osso duro’. This time the board persisted, judging other available options, relative to salaries, unfavourable compared with the coach.
