According to Globo.com, Renato Gaúcho has rejected an official offer from Vasco. He considered the terms too low and phoned the board on Monday to decline.
His representatives made a counter-proposal, but talks did not advance. The board judged his salary request excessive, creating a financial impasse. He sought a package similar to his Fluminense pay, which the hierarchy currently views as unfeasible.
Club officials had contacted his agent last week to explore the possibility of him taking charge. At that point, Renato indicated he was open to progressing discussions.
Vasco had also shown interest in Artur Jorge and Marcelo Gallardo, though neither pursuit moved forward. With urgency to appoint a new manager, the board intensified talks with Renato, who had emerged as the leading candidate.
Renato Gaúcho, 63, has managed Vasco twice, first from 2005 to 2007 and again in 2008. He was targeted at the end of 2024 after Rafael Paiva was dismissed, but he declined Pedrinho’s offer and Fábio Carille was hired at the start of 2025.
