The Renato Ibarra saga is over after the winger finally completed his move from América to Atlas.

While there had been reports suggesting that player swaps would be involved in the deal, it turned out to be much more straightforward.

The 29-year-old has signed a year-long loan with Atlas that includes an option of making the deal permanent.

Ibarra was dropped from América’s first team squad in March after he was charged with domestic violence.

His exit from Las Águilas was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic which caused the cancellation of the 2020 Clausura.

Commenting on the Ecuador international’s arrival, Atlas manager Rafael Puente said he expected Ibarra to improve his side’s flank play.

“To speak of Renato is to speak of the most decisive footballer in 1 v 1. It will enhance our external game to serve our strikers,” Puente said.

While it is a loan deal, there is almost certainly no way back for Ibarra at América if things don’t work out for him at Atlas.

The Azulcrema noted his departure on Twitter by posting: “We wish you success in your new project.”

Ibarra spent four years in Mexico City after joining from Dutch side Vitesse in June 2016.
