Renato Sanches (29) has terminated his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and is now a free agent, according to Record Portugal. The 29-year-old midfielder brings an end to a disappointing four-year spell with the capital club, having struggled for consistency due to a succession of injuries and loan spells.
The Portuguese international midfielder joined PSG from Lille in 2022 with hopes of reaching another level in his career after impressing during his time with the northern club. However, his spell in Paris was repeatedly disrupted by fitness problems. The former Lille midfielder has suffered 21 injuries over the past four years, resulting in almost 550 days on the sidelines. He has also endured unsuccessful loan spells with Roma, Benfica and Panathinaikos.
Sanches’ career had initially promised considerably more. He won the Golden Boy award at 19 and was part of Portugal’s squad that won the European Championship in 2016. After struggling for regular playing time at Bayern Munich, Sanches revived his career at Lille, helping the club win the Ligue 1 title in 2021. At 29, the midfielder must now find a new club as a free agent and attempt to revive a career that once appeared destined for the very top.
