With the Libertadores entering its closing stages and a Flamengo v Fluminense final still possible, Renê addressed the debate around favourites.

"Sometimes there is that talk of Palmeiras and Flamengo being favourites, but you hear it less about the Libertadores. In the Brasileirão there is a lot of that conversation. They are two teams showing their strength, with strong squads, investment, and the moment is good. I believe all of that shapes people’s opinions," Renê said, speaking to ESPN.

"We know that, once you are on the pitch, it is eleven against eleven, it is all equal, especially in cups, where it is a different game, not as open as a points league. We talk about it, but we know our strength, and that on the pitch we do not owe anything to anyone."

The Rio rivals are on opposite sides of the draw, so they could only meet in the final on 28 November at Estadio Centenario in Uruguay.

Fluminense face Platense in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 first-leg win at the Maracanã. The return is on Tuesday 15 at 19:00 Brasília time at Estadio Ciudad de Vicente López.

Flamengo meet Independiente del Valle, holding a 2-0 lead from Quito. The decisive second leg is on Thursday 17 at 21:30 Brasília time at the Maracanã, and a full house is expected. ESPN and Disney+ will show the match.
