Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers watched her team come back from a goal down for the second successive week to secure a thumping win.

The Gunners beat West Ham United 5-1 in the Women’s Super League on Friday following their 4-1 win over London City Lionesses last weekend.

And one of the goalscorers was Australian Caitlin Foord, notching on her 100th WSL appearance – and Slegers had special praise for her and her contributions in an Arsenal shirt.

“Caitlin, you always know what you’re going to get and she works so hard for the team,” Slegers told the club’s website.

“She does so many things, so she should be very proud of all the years she represented Arsenal and for her performance tonight as well. So I’m really, really happy for her and again, really happy for the team.”

Slegers used her squad wisely. She brought in Frida Maanum from the start, explaining afterwards: “We wanted to do some things in the game today that we thought fit Frida really well, and we did that.”

Maanum was replaced at half-time by Sweden’s Stina Blackstenius – the scorer of the winner in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final – who proceeded to score the third goal.

New record signing Olivia Smith, Victoria Pelova, Taylor Hinds and Lotte Wubben-Moy all came on in the final third of the match, showing the strength in depth that the Gunners have at their disposal this season as they look to add to their trophy cabinet.

Renee Slegers: I’m really happy with the team performance

And despite what seems on the face of it an emphatic scoreline, Slegers was impressed with the work her squad put in to get the result despite tough weather conditions.

“It was a hard game today. It’s a very physical opponent, very disciplined. They make it really, really hard and they have some quality up top. So I think intensity was high and it was a hard game for us to play. So again we had to be calm, composed, wear down, be confident that things can happen early or late. And I think what I’m really happy with today again is the team performance.

“We have starters, we have finishers. There’s so many players contributing, I think four different goal scorers, players coming on, having such an important impact.”

Arsenal’s next WSL match is against Manchester United on Sunday, 21st September, at Leigh Sports Village.
