An own goal from Marius Louër put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute. Mousa Al-Taamari then doubled the lead with a left-footed finish into the top left after Valentin Rongier's through ball (25.).
After the restart, substitute Prosper Peter halved the deficit from close range following Lilian Raolisoa's pass (65.). Angers were handed a lifeline when Peter won a penalty (79.), but Amine Sbaï's spot kick was saved by Brice Samba (81.), preserving the points.
Herve Koffi kept Angers in reach with several stops either side of the interval, including low saves from Al-Taamari and Breel Embolo. Samba's late intervention from the spot was the game's decisive piece of goalkeeping.
Rennes recorded 15 attempts with seven on target and won 11 corners, controlling 59.4% possession. Angers produced six attempts, four on target.
