Rennes set for quiet January, move only if players leave

Rennes are expected to keep January low key, acting only if exits create room in a squad that has stabilised since October.

According to L'Équipe, Ludovic Blas is not expected to leave this winter despite limited game time.

Habib Beye was under pressure in October, but results have improved since. The squad now looks equipped to chase Europe in spring, so there is no need to remodel after two slimming windows.

Across January and the summer there were 51 movements in 2025, with around €140m spent and a similar sum recouped. That followed the ill-fated 2024 summer, when signings such as Portuguese Jota struggled in Ligue 1 and key men Benjamin Bourigeaud and Martin Terrier left.

Beye reiterated last weekend that the club will only act if players go. President Arnaud Pouille, speaking in early December, backed stability and aligned with the views of Beye and sporting director Loïc Désiré. He said there would be no ripping things up six months after late August business, joked the communications and legal teams are on leave in January, and allowed for minor tweaks if some summer leavers depart early.

Potential departures include goalkeeper Gauthier Gallon, 32, under contract to 2027 and no longer the number two since the summer, and midfielder Glen Kamara, 30, tied to 2028 and used for 26 minutes since then. Rennes would also consider a loan for Cameroonian left wing-back Mahamadou Nagida, 20, contracted to 2029, who was courted last summer, is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations and has played 87 minutes. A permanent sale is not ruled out.

The core that has powered Beye’s past two months will remain unless an irresistible offer arrives and the club can respond. Prospects Jérémy Jacquet and Esteban Lepaul are more likely to feature in the summer market.
