According to Ouest-France, Rennes striker Breel Embolo is preparing to join Atlanta United in MLS. The 29-year-old is under contract until 2029.

The move could be worth about €17m excluding bonuses. The Swiss international has 92 caps and 26 goals.

Embolo arrived at Rennes late last summer after three seasons at Monaco for roughly €15m. He scored eight and provided three assists in Ligue 1 as Rennes returned to Europe, but saw less time late on with Estéban Lepaul preferred at centre-forward.

A month after Switzerland's World Cup quarter-final exit to Argentina, 3-1 after extra time on 12 July, when he was sent off, Embolo could cross the Atlantic again. He returned on 6 August and had been linked in Serie A, although Atlanta have emerged as the more concrete option.

It had been agreed he would assess offers this summer following a World Cup in which he recorded two goals and two assists. Rennes would reduce a significant salary with his exit, but lose valuable attacking experience, and could target a taller profile to replace him.
