From a Liverpool perspective, this has all the hallmarks of a move that was never truly there for Anfield. Olise is a brilliant player, no argument on that, but when a report says he sees Real Madrid as “the world’s greatest club” and is ready to push for that specific transfer, Liverpool’s role starts to look like familiar background noise.

Supporters have seen this pattern before. A top-level talent becomes available, Liverpool are named, the story gathers momentum, and then the reality emerges that the player has another destination in mind. If that is the case, there is little value in getting dragged into an expensive process that mainly strengthens someone else’s leverage.

There is also the price. If figures in the region of £150m are being discussed around Real Madrid’s wider plans, Liverpool should be extremely cautious. However gifted Olise is, that sort of outlay would reshape an entire window. Under Andoni Iraola, the smarter route may be to spread investment across multiple positions rather than chase one glamour signing whose preference appears elsewhere.

For Liverpool, the sensible stance is simple. Admire the player, track the situation, and move on quickly if Real Madrid are genuinely his chosen destination.
