Curtis Jones transfer latest as Inter Milan return and Liverpool stand firm

Inter Milan are preparing a second attempt to sign Curtis Jones, with talkSPORT reporting that Liverpool have already turned down an opening offer worth £21.6 million. The Italian side remain interested, but any progress appears dependent on a significant increase on that first proposal.

Liverpool’s position is clear. Their valuation sits at £30 million and, as things stand, there is no indication they are ready to soften it. In fact, amid renewed interest from Serie A, that stance has become firmer. Inter are understood to be working on a fresh proposal, though no new negotiations have yet taken place between the clubs.

Inter Milan push for Curtis Jones

There is a genuine desire from the player’s side to explore a move this summer, and Inter’s persistence underlines that interest. The club had previously felt a deal was unlikely after the initial approach was rejected, yet the situation has not closed. Instead, it has moved into a familiar late-window pattern, one where interest remains active but valuation is the key obstacle.

Liverpool, now under Andoni Iraola, are not under pressure to sell. The Merseyside club are “prepared to keep hold of Jones beyond the current transfer window if their valuation is not met”, a firm message to suitors testing the market. Jones, 25, is entering the final year of his contract, which creates an obvious decision point, but the club are also said to be relaxed about the possibility of him leaving for free next summer if no acceptable offer arrives now.

Liverpool valuation shapes the deal

That is the most striking part of the current picture. Liverpool are understood to have no concerns over Jones’ “attitude or professionalism”, which removes one of the typical drivers behind a sale. This is not a case of a club forcing an exit. It is a valuation-led situation, and Inter will need to adjust accordingly if they want Liverpool to engage.

The report adds that “The Serie A side are going to have to significantly increase their bid” to bring Liverpool to the table. For now, Jones’ future remains open. There is still a route where he stays, impresses Iraola and potentially earns a new contract. Equally, if the £30 million figure is met, the direction of travel feels obvious.

Game time concerns at Anfield

Much of this stems from Jones’ role last season. With Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai regularly preferred, his opportunities became more sporadic. He made 16 substitute appearances in the league, scored once and contributed two assists across 34 Premier League matches. In Europe, he started only four Champions League games.

That backdrop has inevitably fed speculation. A player of Jones’ age and profile will want clarity over minutes and importance, especially after his route into the side became increasingly difficult. Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant summed up the case for keeping him when he said: “I just think sometimes you just need continuity to get into a regular rhythm to get your confidence up.

“Sometimes, chopping and changing positions and coming in and out of the team is hard, and he gets judged week in, week out. “For some reason, he doesn’t get the same chances that the others get. Mac Allister has been way off it, but Slot is still playing him ahead of Jones. “I would like to see him there next season because he can do a job all over the pitch.”

Our View

From a disappointed Liverpool supporter perspective, this report feels frustrating on several levels. Curtis Jones has always represented more than squad depth. He is one of our own, a Liverpool-born midfielder who has carried the hopes of academy supporters for years. To see his future reduced to whether someone meets a £30 million valuation is hard to take.

There is also a wider concern here about how he has been used. If “continuity” is what he needed, then Liverpool have not always provided it. He has often looked like the player asked to fit around others rather than being trusted to build momentum himself. Supporters can accept competition, but it is difficult to watch a local player struggle for rhythm while others keep their place regardless of form.

If Inter really want him, they should pay properly. Liverpool should not be pushed around. But from a fan’s point of view, the bigger disappointment is that it has reached this stage at all. Jones should have been in a stronger position by now, either as a key first-team option or with a renewed contract reflecting his importance. Instead, there is uncertainty, and that leaves an uneasy feeling that a valuable player, and a genuine connection to the club, could slip away too easily.
