Inter and Hakan Calhanoglu will reportedly part ways at the end of the 2026/27 season, with the Turk set to leave next summer as a free agent. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the 32-year-old will not renew his contract with the Nerazzurri despite his household status at Giuseppe Meazza.
Calhanoglu had a complicated season. Injuries restricted him to just 22 Serie A appearances, yet the impact was telling. Indeed, the former Milan midfielder tallied nine goals and four assists, helping Inter dethrone Napoli and secure their 21st Scudetto.
Most importantly, Calhanoglu recovered his teammates’ trust after a turbulent summer of 2025. Heavily linked with a transfer, he was the subject of interest from Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, with the latter going to great lengths to persuade him to return to Turkey.
It felt like his departure was a foregone conclusion, especially considering the player refused to address speculation over his future. However, Cristian Chivu convinced him to stay and helped him patch things up with other Inter stars, including Lautaro Martinez, who had publicly voiced his frustration during pre-season.
Chivu’s decision to bring Calhanoglu back into the fold proved season-defining as Inter secured their first domestic double since 2010. And the Turkey captain emerged as one of the driving forces behind the Nerazzurri’s commanding run in Serie A.
Despite entering the autumn of his career, Calhanoglu remains one of the most influential midfield figures at San Siro. Although Inter are preparing to overhaul their veteran squad, they can ill-afford to lose one of the team’s pillars, even if it means they’ll lose him on a free transfer in 12 months.
