Leeds United settled for a hard-fought point against Manchester United Sunday afternoon despite coming close to a winner on numerous occasions.

Brenden Aaronson fired the Whites into the lead on the 62nd minute but the home side were soon pegged back by Matheus Cunha and, despite numerous chances, were unable to find a winner.

Ahead of a big matchday in West Yorkshire, Daniel Farke had made two changes to the side that held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Thursday, recalling Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor, as Sean Longstaff returned to the bench from injury.

In a bouncing Elland Road, singing from well before kick-off, it was Leeds on the front foot from the off! On the break, Okafor and Aaronson combined to feed Calvert-Lewin in the box but he fired just over the bar.

The visitors’ first effort came as Benjamin Sesko was played into the area but Jaka Bijol was wise to the threat, tackling well.

On the 22nd minute, all of Elland Road stood for a poignant round of applause in honour of young fan Joshua Pick, who sadly passed away recently.

Bijol was ready again when Patrick Dorgu’s ball found Diogo Dalot in the box, and the latter fired over the bar from the resulting corner.

Marauding forward past defenders, Aaronson aimed to give the Whites the lead but his shot from distance skidded wide. Just minutes later, Anton Stach sent a curling, teasing ball into the visitors’ box and there was Leeds' number 9, but Calvert-Lewin's glancing header clattered off the post.

The hosts were in the ascendancy but it was the opposition who nearly found the first goal. From a corner, Casemiro’s header was flicked on by Leny Yoro however Lucas Perri rose well and acrobatically tipped the ball over the bar. From there, the half fizzled out.

HALF TIME: Leeds United 0-0 Manchester United

The second half got underway with both sides unchanged but with the Whites pressing harder and higher in the search of an opener.

From a Gabriel Gudmundsson long throw, Pascal Struijk headed down, and there was the Swede once more. His half-volley forced Senne Lammens into a tough save down to his left.

Minutes later, it was Okafor driving Leeds forward, seizing on a pass from Stach to win the Whites a corner. Lammens tipped the drilled-in ball wide before Calvert-Lewin could seize on it.

Aaronson was next to carry the hosts into the box, yet again the Belgian keeper was wary to the danger and the opposition survived.

Leeds got their goal on the 62nd minute and what a goal it was! Struijk's long ball missed the head of Calvert-Lewin and bounced past the visitors' backline. Aaronson was onto it in a flash, carrying well and firing home beyond Lammens.

However, just minutes later, the opposition levelled the score as raced onto the ball and poked into the back of the net from inside the area.

Leeds were keen to restore their advantage and, from a long-throw, Okafor attempted the spectacular. The Swiss international’s bicycle kick from a few yards out would have nestled into the corner of the net but for the flying Lammens’ hand.

The opposition nearly completed the comeback, substitute Joshua Zirkzee feeding Sesko in the box, but the Slovenian striker’s effort went the wrong side of the post.

Desperate for a winner, and with Elland Road roaring and on its feet, Leeds drove forward once more. Wilfried Gnonto rolled in Stach, who found Joël Piroe on the edge of the box, but the substitute’s curling shot floated just over the bar.

From a corner moments later, the Dutchman’s strong strike was blocked. And, as the half wound down, an ambitious Stach volley spun wide.

A fiery, nonstop second half finished all square, forcing the Whites to settle for a point and extending the unbeaten run to seven matches ahead of the midweek trip to Newcastle United.
