Juventus test Liverpool resolve over Chiesa return

Early feelers have been placed between Juventus and Liverpool over a possible return to Turin for Federico Chiesa, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. Juventus have moved after receiving encouragement from the player, sounding out Liverpool on the feasibility of a loan deal later in January.

Liverpool timing shapes talks

From Liverpool’s perspective, the timing is delicate. With Mohamed Salah absent at the Africa Cup of Nations and Alexander Isak sidelined through injury, Arne Slot cannot afford to weaken his attacking options. That reality has stalled any immediate movement, although the landscape may look different in three weeks.

Chiesa career crossroads

Signed by Liverpool in summer 2024 for 12 million euros plus 3 million in bonuses, Chiesa has struggled to impose himself in English football. His return of four goals and five assists in 34 appearances underlines a spell that never quite ignited. Back in Turin, the appeal is familiarity and opportunity, potentially under Luciano Spalletti, who once described him as “the Sinner of Italy”. With the 2026 World Cup looming, a loan based Chiesa-bid could suit all parties.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Chiesa has never lacked effort, but his Liverpool spell has felt like a player slightly out of sync with the rhythm and physical demands of the Premier League. There is sympathy in that, particularly given how disruptive injuries and tactical adjustments have been during the past 18 months.

However, letting him leave in January, even on loan, carries risk. With Salah away and attacking depth already stretched, supporters will worry about short term fragility. Slot’s system relies heavily on wide players who can stretch games and maintain intensity, and removing another option mid season feels uncomfortable.

That said, there is also realism. If Chiesa’s confidence and sharpness are better served by a return to familiar surroundings, a structured loan could protect Liverpool’s longer term interests. Fans will expect safeguards, minutes management, and a clear plan. Sentiment aside, Liverpool supporters want clarity, either Chiesa becomes a genuine contributor in the second half of the season, or the club ensures his value does not erode further.
