Manchester United’s search for attacking freshness has reportedly led them towards William Gomes, the FC Porto winger whose rise has been sharp enough to stir half of Europe. According to A Bola, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle United, AS Roma, Atletico Madrid and Juventus are all interested in the “superstar” Brazilian.
For United, this feels like the sort of deal that sits between ambition and calculation. Gomes is 20, direct, two-footed in his intent if not always his execution, and capable of playing from either flank. His numbers last season, 13 goals and two assists, suggest a winger who already understands the value of end product.
Gomes joined Porto from Sao Paulo in January 2025 for around €9million, which makes the current numbers fascinating. His release clause stands at €80m (£70m), although Porto are reportedly willing to sell for around €45m (£38.7m).
That matters. In a market where potential is priced almost as aggressively as proven output, £38.7m for a winger of this profile looks less like a gamble and more like an early claim. United know this world well. Wait too long, and the next step in a player’s development adds another £30m to the asking price.
Michael Carrick’s third-place finish gave Manchester United a platform, yet it also raised the bar. Finishing third is progress. Staying there, closing gaps, and becoming a side with repeatable attacking threat is another matter entirely.

Gomes is described as an explosive winger with a direct style and a real ability to beat his man. That profile has obvious appeal for United, particularly if they want more variety in wide areas. He may not arrive as a guaranteed starter, but he could arrive as a player with enough pace, courage and unpredictability to change games.
Arsenal’s interest is no surprise either. Mikel Arteta’s side have spent heavily, and while their success has boosted commercial strength, there is always a limit to buying finished stars. Andrea Berta and Arsenal’s recruitment team will know the value of signing players before they become £90m assets.
Newcastle’s presence adds another layer. They have shown a willingness to move early and aggressively for rising talent. Juventus, Roma and Atletico Madrid ensure this is not simply an English auction.
For United, the question is whether Gomes is the right sort of risk. He is not yet complete. He is not yet Premier League proven. Yet that is precisely why this moment exists. The elite clubs no longer wait for certainty. They buy possibility, then try to turn it into inevitability.
From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, this is exactly the type of link that feels both exciting and slightly nerve-shredding. William Gomes sounds like the modern transfer market in one player, young, fast, expensive, and wrapped in enough potential to make every recruitment department start dreaming.
The key question is role. If United are signing him as a ready-made answer, that feels risky. The Premier League is unforgiving, and wide players need more than pace and flair. They need decision-making, defensive discipline, and the ability to survive long spells without space.
Yet if Gomes is viewed as a developmental signing, the logic improves. United have too often paid premium money once a player has already become obvious. This sort of move would represent a smarter approach, especially at around £38.7m rather than the full £70m clause.
Carrick’s side need more attacking unpredictability. Too often, United attacks can feel rehearsed rather than instinctive. A winger who can beat a man, carry the ball and force defenders backwards has obvious value.
The concern is competition. Arsenal offer stability, Newcastle offer a growing project, and Europe’s elite clubs can sell patience. United must make sure the plan is clear. Gomes needs minutes, coaching and a pathway. Without that, potential quickly becomes another expensive question.
