Report names the two priorities for Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window

Barcelona’s summer planning is starting to take a clearer shape, and the message coming through is easy to understand. The two positions that desperately need to be addressed are the ones that are going to be addressed, namely striker and center-back.

According to SPORT, Barcelona’s two priority objectives for the upcoming summer transfer window are Alessandro Bastoni and Julian Alvarez. The former is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in Europe while the latter has made a name for himself at Atletico Madrid.

From a Barcelona perspective, the logic is obvious enough. Bastoni would answer the need for a high-level left-sided centre-back, a profile that remains valuable in a team that want defenders comfortable stepping forward, building play cleanly and defending big spaces.

Alvarez, meanwhile, fits the long-term search for a forward who can eventually lead the line after Robert Lewandowski. That pairing says a lot about what Barca think they still lack. It is not just about buying talent, but about solving two issues at once.

The difficulty, of course, is that both deals look enormously complicated. Bastoni is a key player for Inter and not someone they would let go cheaply, while Alvarez is under a long contract at Atletico and would almost certainly require a huge operation financially.

Thus the practicality of these deals is something that is still unclear. Barcelona are not in a situation where they can spend without worrying and they might eventually have to pick their poison between signing one or the other.

Until the financial conditions become clearer, these deals are still very much in the works. However, it is encouraging to see Barcelona operate along the same direction as what common sense suggests and let’s wait and see how things play out.
