Real Madrid have entered another defining chapter under Florentino Perez, and the early signs suggest Jose Mourinho intends to reshape the club with authority, experience and immediate ambition. According to reporting from The Athletic, Madrid’s hierarchy are moving aggressively across the transfer market after Perez secured another presidential term following his victory over challenger Enrique Riquelme.
This is a club that rarely pauses for reflection. The departure of Alvaro Arbeloa after only six months in charge has already been absorbed into a much wider rebuilding project, one now firmly centred around Mourinho’s return to the Bernabeu.
The Portuguese manager has signed until 2029 and wasted little time asserting influence over recruitment strategy.
“Mourinho travelled to Madrid last week and met at a city centre hotel with general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat.”
That meeting, attended by super agent Jorge Mendes, appears to have accelerated Madrid’s activity dramatically.
Few moves this summer carry more significance than Madrid’s swift operation to sign Bernardo Silva following his Manchester City departure.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both monitored the Portuguese international closely, but Madrid moved decisively once it became clear Bernardo would not renew at City.

For Mourinho, Bernardo represents tactical intelligence, versatility and elite level control under pressure. He can operate centrally, drift wide or support attacks between lines, exactly the type of adaptable profile Mourinho values in major matches.
The deal also reflects Madrid’s continued ability to act quickly when elite opportunities emerge.
Madrid supporters will understandably feel energised by this approach. Bernardo arrives without a transfer fee yet still represents one of Europe’s most refined midfield operators. His experience, leadership and technical quality should elevate Madrid immediately.
Alongside Bernardo, Madrid have secured Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth €55m plus €5m in add ons.
“The left-back wanted to leave Chelsea this summer and preliminary talks had taken place weeks ago.”
Initially, Madrid explored moves for Josko Gvardiol and Riccardo Calafiori, but Mourinho specifically requested Cucurella once those discussions stalled.
That decision feels revealing. Mourinho appears determined to recruit players ready to contribute instantly rather than focusing exclusively on developmental profiles.
Cucurella’s aggression, energy and tactical adaptability fit perfectly within Mourinho’s demanding structure.
Real Madrid’s defensive reshaping remains unfinished.
Denzel Dumfries has already arrived to strengthen right back after Madrid activated his €20m release clause, while Ibrahima Konate is reportedly closing in on a free transfer.
Those additions follow the departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, both significant figures during Madrid’s recent history.

“As for a centre-back, other names under consideration are City’s Ruben Dias, Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund and Alessandro Bastoni of Inter.”
That shortlist highlights the level Madrid continue targeting.
Mourinho clearly wants physical authority and leadership added to the back line. Konate offers athletic dominance, while names like Dias and Bastoni would provide organisational control alongside technical quality.
There is also clear pressure to reduce squad numbers.
La Liga regulations allow only 25 registered senior players, and Madrid currently exceed that limit after multiple arrivals and the return of Endrick.
Raul Asencio, Ferland Mendy, Fran Garcia and Dani Ceballos are all viewed as potential departures.
Ceballos’ situation appears particularly complicated. The midfielder reportedly wants to leave on a free transfer despite Madrid hoping to generate a fee.
Meanwhile, Mendy’s injury record continues complicating efforts to move him elsewhere.
Despite already landing Bernardo Silva, Madrid still want another creative midfielder.
Enzo Fernandez remains admired, although Chelsea’s £120m valuation creates obvious complications. The Argentine’s desire to play Champions League football reportedly makes Madrid his preferred destination, which could become significant later in the window.
Another option attracting attention is AZ’s highly rated 20-year-old midfielder Kees Smit.
“Madrid are seen as an option that appeals to the player.”
Again, Jorge Mendes’ involvement behind the scenes could prove influential if Madrid accelerate negotiations.
The broader strategy here feels unmistakable. Mourinho wants technical midfielders capable of controlling tempo while maintaining intensity without possession.
That vision creates uncertainty around several current squad members.
Eduardo Camavinga, despite his enormous talent, is reportedly not viewed as untouchable by Mourinho. Madrid are open to offers, although sources close to the French international insist leaving is “impossible”.
Nico Paz also faces uncertainty.
Madrid had long planned to activate their buyback option from Como for around €9m, but Bernardo’s arrival and further midfield recruitment now complicate his pathway.
“Mourinho and Nico have already spoken.”
Those conversations may become decisive.
Como remain aware the player would happily continue developing under Cesc Fabregas, particularly with Champions League football now available in Italy.
Despite Mourinho’s reputation for favouring experienced players, there are signs Madrid still intend balancing youth development carefully.
Franco Mastantuono remains highly regarded internally. Madrid would consider a loan only if the club actively encouraged it, something sources close to Mourinho suggest remains unlikely.
“Sources close to Mourinho indicate that he is a player he likes a lot and has faith in.”
That should encourage supporters concerned about academy pathways under Mourinho.
Endrick’s role also appears intriguing. Mourinho reportedly wants to use the Brazilian on the right wing, adding further unpredictability to Madrid’s attacking options.
Signing another striker currently feels unlikely unless multiple departures occur first. Budget limitations and squad restrictions make that scenario difficult, though not impossible.
Ultimately, Mourinho’s Madrid already look purposeful, ruthless and strategically aggressive.
Perez has once again chosen experience over experimentation. The message is clear, Real Madrid expect immediate success.
And Mourinho appears fully prepared to embrace that pressure all over again.
Real Madrid supporters should feel genuinely excited about the direction this summer is taking because there is already visible authority behind Mourinho’s return. This does not feel like a nostalgic appointment driven purely by sentiment. It feels like Madrid deliberately choosing a manager capable of restoring edge, discipline and elite mentality quickly.
Bernardo Silva could prove one of the smartest signings in Europe. Free transfers involving players of that calibre rarely happen, and his tactical intelligence should suit Mourinho perfectly. Cucurella also feels like a very Mourinho type player, aggressive, intense and mentally resilient.
There will still be scepticism around certain areas.
Some fans may question whether Mourinho’s style remains suited to modern football over a long term project lasting until 2029. Others may worry about younger talents like Nico Paz or Camavinga potentially losing importance within a squad increasingly shaped around experienced figures.
Yet Madrid supporters traditionally value winning above all else.
The club’s recruitment strategy also looks noticeably sharper than several European rivals this summer. Fast decisions, elite targets and clear planning are all visible already.
Most importantly, Mourinho appears fully invested in rebuilding Madrid around balance rather than simply collecting stars. That could become extremely dangerous for the rest of Europe if the dressing room fully buys into his methods once again.
