For a few seconds, FC Barcelona feared the worst again. Joan Garcia raised his arm after around 20 minutes against Rayo Vallecano, and the immediate reaction inside Camp Nou was anxiety. Given the recent concern around his physical condition, it looked like another injury scare at the worst possible time.
According to Mundo Deportivo, though, the real story was far less alarming. Joan did ask for the medical staff, but the report says the stoppage was not really driven by a serious problem for the goalkeeper. Instead, it was part of a clever little in-game moment involving Raphinha.
The key detail is that Raphinha was the one who wanted the game paused. The Brazilian forward needed to change his boots after a poor start in which he did not feel comfortable with his footwear, and Joan became his accomplice by creating the window for that to happen.
So while the doctors came on to check the goalkeeper, Raphinha used the break to switch boots. It shows the kind of quick thinking players use in real matches, especially when small details like boots, footing or comfort can affect performance more than supporters sometimes realise.
It also explains why the stadium fell silent so quickly. After what happened against Newcastle, nobody wanted to see Joan Garcia in trouble again, and the fear was not limited to the stands. Eventually, Joan stayed on, played another strong game, and Raphinha got the equipment adjustment he wanted.
Joan went on to put in a MOTM performance and did not put a foot wrong. He looked comfortable throughout the game and any concerns of an injury were dissipated by the player himself later. If it was indeed just a time-wasting tactic, it was genius from the Spaniard.
It remains to be seen if the Spaniard links up with the Spain squad and if he gets a chance to represent La Roja in the upcoming friendlies.
