After losing Zeki Celik to Juventus, Roma are in the market for a new right-back. According to Sky Sports via Calciomercato, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have set their sights on Nahuel Molina and Dodo.
Roma had hoped to convince Celik to sign a new deal after letting his previous contract expire at the end of June. However, the Turkish defender has joined the record-time Italian champions on a free transfer. As a result, the Giallorossi are now looking to strengthen the right wing.
Gasperini needs a competitive squad now that Roma are set to feature in the Champions League for the first time in eight years. Therefore, they must sign a suitable replacement for Celik, even though Wesley Franca could return to the right wing in the wake of the Turk’s departure.
Nevertheless, a new right-back should arrive by the end of the summer transfer window.
Molina has starred for Argentina during this summer’s World Cup, nailing down the right-back position as his own. However, he has fallen out of favor at Atletico Madrid and could be available in a cut-price deal at the end of the tournament.
At 28, Molina is in his prime, and with his contract due to expire next summer, Roma can realistically hope to sign him on favorable terms. Yet, his superb World Cup form could help him convince Diego Simeone to re-establish him in Madrid.
With that in mind, Roma have also shortlisted Dodo. Like Molina, he has less than a year left to run on his contract at Fiorentina. In addition to the Giallorossi, Inter have also been linked with the Brazilian defender over the past six months.
