Luciano Spalletti has reportedly urged Juventus to sign Marseille wingback Emerson Palmieri this summer. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Roma and Napoli coach is keen to reunite with the Brazilian star in Turin.

Spalletti helped Emerson launch his career on European soil, signing him from Santos in 2015. During his three-year stint at the Stadio Olimpico, the 31-year-old established himself as one of the most promising left-backs in Europe’s top-five leagues.

Emerson left Serie A to join Chelsea in 2018 for nearly €30 million. Meanwhile, Spalletti wanted to reunite with his protege at Napoli, but the Partenopei failed to find an agreement with West Ham United. Instead, Emerson moved to Marseille last summer and flourished in his first season in Ligue 1.

Coached by Roberto De Zerbi for most of the campaign, Emerson has steered back on track, making 28 league appearances for Les Olympiens. Now, he could return to Serie A, with Spalletti looking to bring him to Juventus.

Our Take on Juventus & Emerson Palmieri

Juventus could part ways with Andrea Cambiaso in the coming months. After failing to secure Champions League qualification, the Turin giants must ‘sacrifice’ at least one first-team star, with the Italian wingback emerging as a potential candidate to generate much-needed funds.

In addition to Cambiaso, Filip Kostic is on his way out. Juventus have refused to extend the Serbian veteran’s expiring contract. Therefore, he’ll leave as a free agent next month. Finally, after an injury-hit two-year stint at the Allianz Stadium, Juan Cabal could also depart the club.

Therefore, Spalletti’s interest in Emerson, whom he knows very well, comes as a little surprise.
