Tottenham Eye Benfica Goalkeeper as Summer Plans Gather Pace

Spurs Tracking Long Term Goalkeeping Option

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Anatoliy Trubin has emerged as a serious option for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer transfer window. The Benfica goalkeeper is reportedly being monitored closely as uncertainty grows around the future of Guglielmo Vicario.

Vicario’s situation has shifted considerably in recent months. The Italian goalkeeper, once viewed as untouchable in north London, lost his place during the second half of the campaign and now finds himself linked with Inter Milan. Should Spurs sanction a sale, attention may quickly turn towards Trubin.

The Ukrainian international fits a recruitment profile Tottenham have increasingly favoured in recent seasons, young, technically assured and carrying substantial room for development. At 24, Trubin already possesses Champions League experience alongside international pedigree.

Benfica Face Difficult Decision

Despite interest from England, Trubin has previously indicated his desire to remain at S.L. Benfica. Still, there appears to be enough ambiguity surrounding his future to keep Premier League clubs attentive.

England has long been viewed as a potential destination for the goalkeeper. Interest reportedly surfaced during the closing stages of the 2023/24 season, shortly after his arrival from FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

Benfica invested €10 million plus bonuses to secure his signature and protected that investment with a contract running until 2028 and a €100 million release clause. Such figures suggest any negotiations would require significant financial commitment from Tottenham.

Stability Needed in North London

Tottenham confirming their Premier League status on Sunday removes one immediate concern for the club hierarchy. Focus can now shift fully towards restructuring key positions within the squad, particularly in goal where uncertainty remains.

Samuel Soares remains Benfica’s alternative option, although Trubin is clearly viewed as the established long term presence between the posts in Lisbon.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Spurs supporters have watched inconsistency become a recurring problem in key moments this season, and while Vicario showed quality early on, confidence around his long term suitability appears to have faded internally.

Trubin represents the kind of signing many fans would welcome. He is young, composed under pressure and already accustomed to high expectation environments. Benfica is rarely an easy club to negotiate with, but their track record of developing elite talent means Tottenham would know they are investing in proven potential rather than gambling on raw ability.

There is also a wider strategic element here. Spurs have spent recent years building a younger core capable of growing together. Trubin would fit neatly into that vision. Supporters would likely see him as part of a longer rebuild rather than a quick fix.

The challenge will be cost. Benfica’s release clause is enormous, even if the final fee would probably fall below that figure. Tottenham fans will expect the club to act decisively if Vicario departs, because replacing a first choice goalkeeper late in the window often creates instability.

For supporters, the encouraging part of this report is that Tottenham appear to be planning ahead rather than reacting under pressure. That alone marks progress.
