The encouraging part is that the player seems sold on the move. “Keen on making the move to Wearside” is the line that jumps out. Supporters can accept losing out to bigger spenders now and then, but when a player sees Sunderland as a serious destination, it says a lot about how the club is being viewed.

There will be nerves over £34m, of course there will. Sunderland fans have seen enough over the years to know money alone guarantees nothing. But this feels different.
