Portuguese outlets A Bola and Record report that Sporting CP have told Sunderland Geny Catamo will only leave if his €60million clause is met, amid conflicting accounts of the Black Cats’ approach.
A Bola says Sunderland made exploratory contact to learn the terms of a deal rather than lodging a formal bid. Sporting’s reply was described as unequivocal, with no willingness to negotiate the 25-year-old’s exit.
Record, meanwhile, claims Sporting rejected an offer and that talks are no longer active following that decision.
Catamo is under contract until June 2029 and is viewed as integral to the champions’ plans for the new season. Sporting are said to have decided that no further key players will depart unless release clauses are met. Catamo’s clause is €60million, around £51million.
Sunderland want to bolster the right side of Régis Le Bris’ attack this summer. It remains to be seen whether they return with a formal offer or switch to alternative targets.
The Black Cats have also been linked with Roma winger Matías Soulé and Bayer Leverkusen attacker Ernest Poku as Florent Ghisolfi assesses right-sided options. Catamo is one of several names under consideration.
