VfL Bochum have evidently found their designated "Feuerwehrmann" to help the club avoid relegation. German footballing journalist Jan Lustig of Kicker Magazine presently confirms a report originating in Bochum's "Tief im Westen" publication with respect to negotiations with 60-year-old German football trainer Dieter Hecking.
Journeyman Hecking happens to be one of the sport's "elder statesmen" who has garnered a reputation as a "rescuer" in recent years. The Castop-Brauxel native's last appointment in the German top flight saw him coach Borussia Mönchengladbach for three years between 2016 and 2019. After that, he coached HSV and Nürnberg in the second division.
Whilst working at Nürnberg, Hecking donned both hats as both the head-coach and sporting director. Bochum find themselves in need of someone who can fill both positions after trainer Peter Zeidler and chief personnel administrator Marc Lettau were both sacked on the same day. Last-placed Bochum endured a humiliating defeat to Frankfurt over the weekend.
